Limerick Turns Red For Munster’s Upcoming Matches

Limerick city will turn red this week in the run up to Munster’s RaboDirect PRO12 match against Leinster on Saturday and the Heineken Cup quarter-final match against Ulster on Easter Sunday.

With an expected 40,000 visitors to Limerick city over the next two weeks, local businesses and shops are being encouraged to extend a warm Munster welcome by decorating their windows in ‘Munster red.’

Thousands of Munster flags and face tattoos will be distributed to fans in Limerick city centre attending both matches and bands will perform at entertainment hotspots en route from the city centre to the stadium.

The water in the O’Connell Monument will be coloured red on both matchdays in support of the team. Munster flags will fly on Limerick city bridges and on key buildings in the city centre, while giant flags have been hung in the former Dunnes building in Sarsfield Street.

Limerick city’s friendly Street Ambassadors will be working on both matchdays, while actors from Limerick’s Bottom Dog Theatre Company will re-enact famous Munster legends to ‘greet’ visiting rugby fans to the city.

A special competition is also being run to encourage local taxi drivers to decorate their taxi in advance of the two big matches with Thomond Park Stadium and RaboDirect sponsoring a special prize of match tickets, a stadium tour and signed Munster jersey for the winning taxi driver.

Taxi drivers should send an image of their decorated car to info@limerickoffice.ie to be in with a chance to win.

Laura Ryan, spokesperson for the Limerick Communications Office, said: “The Limerick experience is legendary on rugby weekends and we’re looking forward to welcoming visiting Leinster and Ulster fans to the city while also backing the Munster team by painting the city red to show our support.”

Munster Rugby would like to thank the Limerick Communications Office for their support and look forward to two great sporting weekends ahead.
