Munster Team Named For British & Irish Cup Opener

Head coach Anthony Foley has named his Munster team and replacements for their opening British & Irish Cup Pool B match against Llanelli at the Waterford Regional Sports Centre on Friday (kick-off 7.30pm).

With the province’s Heineken Cup clash with Toulon taking place on Saturday afternoon, Anthony Foley has a vacancy on the right wing as Munster weigh up their options for both the senior and ‘A’ games.

Otherwise, Foley can call on five of the pack that started against the Cornish Pirates in last season’s British & Irish Cup final.

There is a return to action for Declan Cusack who makes his seasonal debut at out-half alongside Conor Murray.

Promising lock Dave Foley will captain the team, with a back row of Billy Holland, Tommy O’Donnell and Peter O’Mahony being perhaps the strongest combination in the selected side.

A number of players will be hoping to transfer their All-Ireland League form onto the British & Irish Cup stage, including full-back Sean Scanlon, who kicked Cork Constitution to victory over Old Belvedere last Saturday, and replacement Gareth Quinn McDonogh, who starred for Shannon against Garryowen.

Llanelli warmed up for this Pool B clash with a 23-13 away win over Glamorgan Wanderers last Sunday, despite the loss of winger Ryan Baylis who was yellow carded for a high tackle.

They are currently fifth in the Welsh Premiership table – a point ahead of Neath, whom Munster played last season, and nine point adrift of leaders Pontypridd who have the same points total as Swansea.
