Referees Appointed For Opening Heineken Cup Games

Alain Rolland is set to become only the second referee to take charge of 50 Heineken Cup matches when he controls the Round 2 match between Harlequins and Toulouse at the Twickenham Stoop on Saturday, October 17.

Rolland, the former Leinster and Ireland scrum half, will join fellow Irish referee Alan Lewis as a half centurion.

Lewis will take his tournament record tally to 61 matches when he referees the clash between Biarritz Olympique and Gloucester Rugby, which is also on Saturday, October 17.

ERC, the tournament organisers, today released the referee appointments for the first two rounds of the 15th season of the Heineken Cup.

Welshman James Jones will get the action underway with Ulster against Bath, the first of the 78 matches en route to the showpiece final at Stade de France on Saturday, May 22.

The nominated referees are drawn from the ERC 2009/10 Match Officials panel.

Nominations are proposed by the ERC Match Officials Performance Manager Donal Courtney to the ERC Match Officials Sub Committee made up of Referee Managers from the six Unions of the participating teams, who review and confirm the final appointments.
