Flannery And O’Leary On Course To Play Next Month

According to Munster sources, Jerry Flannery and Tomas O’Leary are continuing to make good progress in the recovery from the respective shoulder and ankle injuries that forced them to miss the Lions tour to South Africa.

While the Munster team management are reticent about an exact date of return for Jerry Flannery and Tomas O’Leary, it is expected that if they continue their positive progress, they may be involved in Magners League action in mid to late September.

However, the news on Nick Williams’ knee injury is not so good.

The big Auckland-born back rower, who injured himself in the recent pre-season win over Sale Sharks, will be out of action for up to six weeks following surgery last Friday.

Originally it was hoped that the injury might respond to rest, but further medical examination showed some cartilage damage and Williams underwent an operation last week.

This Friday’s friendly encounter with Leicester Tigers at Welford Road will see the return of Ireland Sevens international James Coughlan to the Munster matchday squad.

Coughlan, named on the bench to face Leicester, was forced to miss the province’s training camp trip to Portugal due to a bout of pneumonia.

Barry Murphy and Ian Dowling have been ruled out for Friday’s game with what are described as ‘nothing more than little niggles.’
