Junior Interpros: Munster In Pole Position

Munster made it two wins out of two in the 2006/07 Guinness Junior Interprovincial championship on Saturday when they beat Ulster 23-19 at Ballyclare RFC. In the weekend’s other match, Leinster reigned supreme over Connacht for a 38-10 victory at North Kildare RFC.

Connacht: Tries: Paul Cody, Alan Cusack

Enniskillen out-half Richard Finlay kicked four penalties and converted a try from his club-mate Mat Maguire, but it was not enough for Ulster to gain revenge on Munster’s Junior side at Ballyclare.

Ulster, coached by Clive Bowles, suffered a 14-12 loss at the hands of Munster in last season’s championship, and they were edged out again at the weekend as tries from Geoff O’Donoghue, Paul Cotter and John Silke, allied to eight points from the boot of Thurles’ John Lillis, saw the visitors triumph.

Paul Cody of Castlebar and Westport’s Alan Cusack both touched down for Connacht but the westerners were overpowered by a strong Leinster side, who garnered tries through Boyne winger Adam Sherrard (2), Navan flanker Bernard Smith (2), Tullamore lock Dave Hanlon and Aaron Carroll, the province’s inside centre from Roscrea.

Leinster and Ulster, who clash at Boyne RFC on Saturday afternoon, will hope leaders Munster slip up away to Connacht in their final game, which takes place at Monivea RFC on Saturday. Both games have a 2.30pm kick-off.

Both Leinster and Ulster have one win so far – they each beat Connacht over the first two rounds of the Interpros.
