Nankivell Is Munster's Only Change For Bulls Clash

Alex Nankivell in action for Munster
Craig Casey will captain an almost unchanged Munster team in Saturday's BKT United Rugby Championship quarter-final against the Vodacom Bulls (kick-off 1pm local time/12pm Irish time).

Back from injury, Alex Nankivell is the only alteration to the Munster side that beat the Lions a fortnight ago to secure a fifth place finish in the URC table.

Craig Casey continues as captain in the injury-enforced absence of Tadhg Beirne, while a leg injury has unfortunately ruled Jack Crowley out of the Loftus Versfeld encounter.

The Pretoria venue holds good memories for Munster as they won there in April 2024. This is the province's 10th successive appearance in the URC play-offs.

Nankivell teams up in the centre with Seán O'Brien, the scorer of Munster's opening try during their 34-31 defeat to the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld in March.

Mike Haley, Andrew Smith, and Shane Daly feature together again in the back-three, with Casey joined at half-back by JJ Hanrahan, who kicked nine points last time out against the Lions.

Corkman Niall Scannell, who is retiring at the end of the season, will pack down in the front row with Jeremy Loughman and Michael Ala'alatoa either side of him.

Evan O'Connell will make his first play-off appearance for Munster, as the 22-year-old maintains his lock partnership with Tom Ahern.

John Hodnett and Brian Gleeson, two of URC's top try scorers this season with nine between them, form a well-balanced back row with Jack O'Donoghue positioned at blindside flanker.

Fineen Wycherley has recovered from injury to claim a bench spot, and is set to make his 150th appearance for the province.

Diarmuid Barron, Josh Wycherley, Conor Bartley, Gavin Coombes, and Alex Kendellen, their hat-trick hero from the recent victory over Ulster, complete the forward cover.

In a six-two split, Ben O'Donovan and Dan Kelly are the back-line options for Munster's sixth ever meeting with the Bulls, who have edged the match-up so far with three wins.

Clayton McMillan's men are aiming to hand the Bulls their first URC loss since they went down 32-19 to the DHL Stormers in March.

"I don't think we're going to be surprised by too much. We know what's coming at us," head coach McMillan said of Johan Ackermann's side.

"We understand the conditions, we understand the arena. and we understand our opposition.

"Everyone will bring something slightly different, you'd be stupid if you don't, but they're a big physical team who like to impose that physicality on you through their set-piece, through their carry, clean, and defence.

"They've got a really good tactical kicking game playing at altitude. You've got to use your local knowledge around that to your advantage.

"So, we know that our source of possession, a lot of it will come from either a contestable kicking game or a long kicking game, and it's our ability to deal with that and be smart around how we use our possession."
