Peter O’Mahony leads a much-changed Ireland team, which includes debutant full-back Michael Lowry, as they resume their Guinness Six Nations campaign at home to Italy.

Team News: Ireland head coach Andy Farrell’s selection shows six personnel changes and two positional switches to the side that lost 30-24 to France in round two.

Uncapped Ulster ace Lowry starts at full-back and is joined in the back-field by Mack Hansen, who switches to the right wing, with James Lowe restored on the left after proving his fitness.

Joey Carbery gets to start his second consecutive Six Nations game at out-half, while Ireland captain Jonathan Sexton has recovered from injury to take his place among the replacements.

Carbery will again be partnered at half-back by Jamison Gibson Park, with Robbie Henshaw joining Garry Ringrose in the centre for his first start since the Autumn Nations Series victory over Argentina.

Leinster hooker Dan Sheehan, who comes in for the injured Ronan Kelleher, is handed his first start for Ireland, flanked by two familiar faces in Tadhg Furlong and Andrew Porter.

With James Ryan sidelined with an adductor issue, there is a first Championship start for the 22-year-old Ryan Baird who joins forces with Tadhg Beirne to complete the tight five.

Munster’s Peter O’Mahony captains Ireland for the ninth time, filling the blindside flanker berth with Caelan Doris moving to number 8. Josh van der Flier continues at openside.

Ulster duo Rob Herring and Kieran Treadwell also notably come in as replacements, the latter set for his first Test involvement since 2017 and his maiden Six Nations appearance.

Meanwhile, Italy head coach Kieran Crowley has made three changes to the team that lost 33-0 to England, with Pierre Bruno, Leonardo Marin and Giovanni Pettinelli coming into the side.

Zebre winger Bruno is set for his Six Nations debut, forming the back-three with Edoardo Padovani and Monty Ioane. Federico Mori drops out of the matchday 23.

Juan Ignacio Brex is joined by Leonardo Marin in an all-Benetton centre partnership, while the only change up front sees Pettinelli, who captained Italy ‘A’ against Spain in October, comes into the back row.

Pre-Match Quotes: Dan Sheehan (Ireland) –

I think it (the France game) was extremely valuable, the whole thing. To get a 60-minute block at that level and at that intensity was a huge step which I probably hadn’t experienced before.

“So to get that experience for games down the line which share the same significance, it was huge. In terms of performance, I thought I went well.

“I thought as a team we maybe struggled to do the basics and commit to our game-plan and just execute on the smaller things like set-piece and executing our set-piece moves.

“We didn’t really get into our flow and sometimes with discipline and losing breakdown, we couldn’t get momentum and it was them just kicking points.

“I was only chatting to someone yesterday and I was saying how I spent four years in the Academy doing the same sort of thing for four years and then made my debut for Leinster in October last season, then Ireland debut a year later, and then Six Nations debut only a few months later.

“It’s all happened really quickly and it’s just me trying to stay in the zone and keep focused on the task ahead and not getting too taken away by it all and just enjoying the moment.”

Kieran Crowley (Italy) –

We have prepared for the Ireland match by focusing on the aspects of the game that did not satisfy us in the first two games.

“We face the next commitment with energy and the desire to improve. It will be a physically tough match against one of the strongest teams in the world.”
