It was a day of mixed emotions for James Topping's squad in Stellenbosch, as they initially closed out their Pool B run with a dominant 62-0 win over Botswana.
They needed as many tries as possible, and amassed 10 in all as Lyndsay Clarke and Chisom Ugwueru bagged a brace each, and Leah Irwin, Amy Larn, Heidi Lyons, Caitríona O'Hagan, Ellie O'Sullivan Sexton, and Alex Connor also touched down.
However, with Australia edging out Canada 15-14, all three teams finished with two wins apiece, and Ireland ended up third in the pool table, meaning a tougher quarter-final against Japan.
Hopes were high when Larn and Ugwueru crossed to open up a 12-point half-time lead, yet the Japanese pipped them by two points in the end thanks to converted efforts from Yuina Yamamoto and Kano Hashimoto.
The Irish Universities side can still better their seventh place finish from two years ago. They face Botswana in the 5th-8th place play-offs tomorrow morning (kick-off 10.26am local time/9.26am Irish time), with live streaming here.
The strong wind foiled Clare Gorman's kick-off at the start of the final pool match. Nonetheless, when Ireland got scrum possession in the second minute, Irwin calmly cut inside two Botswana players to speed over from halfway.
Gorman was bang on the money with her restart kick, allowing Clarke to gobble up the ball without breaking stride, and the Ennis ace's pace took her clear of two defenders to score behind the posts.
Larn was next over the whitewash, her sniping run from a scrum inside the Irish half making it 19-0, before Lyons charged over from her own tap penalty in the seventh minute.
Gorman's cleverly improvised restart, with a low chip into the wind, fell for Irwin to flick a lovely pass out for Clarke to complete her brace just before the half-time hooter.
Leading 29-0 at the interval, the Irish team immediately pushed on with O'Hagan taking advantage of a missed tackle to race clear and score inside 11 seconds of the restart.
Ugwueru came off the bench to force an error, the loose ball and a try in the left corner being her reward. That made it 41-0, and O'Sullivan Sexton got in on the act in the 10th minute, dummying to go through a gap after Lyons' turnover-producing tackle.
Botswana came under pressure at a couple of scrums, leading to a free-kick and replacement Connor had the strength to reach over from close range.
O'Sullivan Sexton converted, and also added the extras to Ugwueru's closing effort as the in-form Munster winger broke through a tackle.
Into the knockout stages, Ireland had almost all of the first-half territory against Japan, and after Gorman was inches away from scoring, Larn used a five-metre scrum to scamper over in the third minute.
Following Gorman's well-struck conversion, the Irish outfit kept playing in the right areas, and Ugwueru picked from a ruck at the edge of Japanese 22 to fend off a tackle and score out wide.
Frustratingly, it remained 12-0 despite some promising attacking phases approaching half-time, as Topping's charges sought to capitalise on their size advantage.
Captain Faith Oviawe threatened to break through at one stage, before Irwin made an important tackle as Japan began to build late momentum thanks to some smart interplay.
Indeed, the Japanese were clinical with their second-half chances, crucially converting both of their tries to take a narrow lead and hold onto it.
Nodoka Miyamoto helped to send Yamamoto darting over from the left wing in the ninth minute. Miyamoto added the conversion herself to make it a five-point game.
Worse followed for Ireland in the 13th minute when pressure on their defence left Oviawe covering two players, and Hashimoto cleverly dummied her way through to score.
Hinano Sugimoto split the posts with her conversion, and ultimately that was the difference, as just when Ireland were in a decent position, O'Sullivan Sexton unfortunately knocked on when tapping a penalty.
