Sarah Delaney began her rugby career with Cill Dara RFC, playing in the amalgamated PortDara Falcons side before making the step up to the Energia All-Ireland League with Blackrock College.
Speaking to the Leinster Rugby website about her appointment as captain, Delaney said: "This is such a great honour to be selected as captain for this brilliant group.
"I want to thank Sana (Govender) and the coaching team for putting their trust in me.
"We are an ambitious squad who are very closely-knit and proud of having the opportunity to wear the famous blue jersey.
"We are working really hard to be ready to hit the ground running when we play Munster, and are particularly excited to play in front of our home crowd at Energia Park on Saturday, August 15."
Originally from Rathangan in County Kildare, Delaney was part of Leinster's Inteprovincial title-winning squads in 2023 and 2024, starting all four games two years ago.
The 21-year-old hooker missed last year's Interpros after being named in Ireland's Rugby World Cup preparation squad, although injury prevented her from featuring at the tournament.
She made her international debut as a teenager, scoring a try in a record 109-0 victory over Kazakhstan in the opening round of the 2023 WXV3 competition.
Most recently, she helped steer the Ireland Under-21s to three wins out of three in this year's Six Nations Women's U-21 Series, including a famous 41-40 defeat of England in Coventry.
Commenting on Delaney and her new leadership role, Leinster head coach Govender said: "We are really fortunate to have so many leaders in this Leinster squad but even amongst them, Sarah really stood out.
"Her passion for the province, her rugby knowledge, and the esteem that she is held in amongst the rest of the squad make her a very natural selection to be our captain.
"We are now looking forward to the competition ahead, and are fully focused on our first game away against Munster on Saturday week."
Meanwhile, the Leinster Women will host an open training session on Thursday evening at The King's Hospital School in Palmerstown. Gates open from 6.30pm.
Supporters are encouraged to attend as Leinster, last season's beaten finalists, continue their preparations for the Vodafone Women's Interprovincial Championship.
After tomorrow's training session, which starts at 7pm, a meet-and-greet will be held with the players and coaches where those present can meet the province's stars and emerging talent, and get some autographs and selfies.
Leinster have one home match in this year's Interpros, entertaining Connacht at Energia Park on Saturday, August 15 (kick-off 4.30pm). Tickets are on sale now.
