The competition has often served as a springboard to further ambitions with several previous winners going on to gain promotion to the All-Ireland League.

The inaugural trophy was won by Rainey Old Boys.

The most famous player to hold a Junior Cup medal is former Ireland international and Rugby World Cup winning coach Felix Jones who won the trophy with Seapoint in 2007.
