Ballymun Rugby Fun Day A Big Draw For Local Kids

Ballymun Rugby Fun Day A Big Draw For Local Kids

Balcurris Park in Ballymun was a sight to behold in the sunshine recently as Unidare Rugby Club’s Fun Day proved to be a huge hit with well over 100 children in attendance.

Leinster Rugby kindly made available their haul of three trophies from the 2012/13 season – the Amlin Challenge Cup, the PRO12 Trophy and the British & Irish Cup – and while the adults were getting their photos taken with the trophies, the youngsters got to experience all aspects of rugby on the pitch.

From coaching to Tag rugby and kicking competitions there was plenty to see and do. Nobody left without some small prize all of which were kindly donated by Leinster Rugby, Metroplex, Haribo and Superquinn.

Some of the Unidare RFC members also used the opportunity to collect funds for St. Francis Hospice in Blanchardstown.

Commenting on its success, Ballymun’s Community Rugby Officer Colm Finnegan thanked Dublin City Council and Ballymun Regeneration for their assistance in making the day happen.

“The Fun Day had been the perfect finale to a highly successful rugby year in Dublin 9 and 11. Rugby is now firmly established in the local primary and secondary schools and this has been reflected in the success of the Unidare RFC underage teams,” he said.

“Another success has been the establishment of a Unidare RFC Women’s team who have shown they are more than a match for any Women’s team in Dublin.”

Although the rugby season is now over it will soon be time to get ready for the 2013/14 campaign. If you would like to play rugby or simply be involved with Unidare, please email coach@unidarerfc.com or phone 0877692257.
