Four Awards For Aviva Stadium
Over the past week, the Aviva Stadium has been honoured in two separate awards schemes. The four new awards follow further a series of awards the stadium received at the end of 2010.
The first award came from the European EPSE for the stadium’s innovative use of polycarbonate both in the roof and the ‘wraparound skin’ of the stadium.
The stadium then received three awards for ‘National Impact’, ‘Best Civil Engineering Project’ and ‘Best Architect’ at the Irish LAMA Awards which were presented last Saturday.
The four new awards follow further a series of awards the stadium received at the end of 2010. These included two awards at the World Architecture Festival where the Aviva Stadium was voted the World’s Best New Building in terms of accessibility (an award open to all new buildings worldwide) and was also Highly Commended in the Best New Sporting Facility category.
The European EPSE Awards acknowledged the stadium as being the ‘first truly site responsive stadium of its kind anywhere in the world’.
It commended the extensive use of polycarbonate in ‘transparent shingles’ which, it said, helped to minimise the impact of the stadium on the adjoining neighbourhood.
The citation said that the Aviva Stadium ’embraced the very best of stadium technology and stadium hospitality providing a total experience for everyone’.
The LAMA Awards were set up by the Local Authorities Association in Ireland to recognise excellence in construction at local, county and national level.
The stadium received three awards for its overall national impact, its civil engineering excellence and for architects Scott Tallon Walker, who along with the London-based Populous, created the innovative design that has been winning plaudits – and awards – worldwide.
Commenting on the awards, Stadium Director Martin Murphy paid tribute to the wider team behind the creation of the stadium.
He said that, over the three-year construction project, some 90 companies and over 6,000 individuals had all worked to create a stadium of which the country could be proud.
He noted that since the stadium opened in May of 2010, it has hosted 17 events on the pitch and almost 2,000 functions in all.
In excess of 700,000 people have attended sporting events at the venue, whilst a further 200,000 have visited the stadium for other events.
