Wikinson Rewarded With Two-Year Deal

South African prop Brett Wilkinson, still in his first season as a professional, has succeeded in securing a new two-year contract with Connacht.

South African prop Brett Wilkinson, still in his first season as a professional, has succeeded in securing a new two-year contract with Connacht.

The 23-year-old joined the province last summer from the University of Cape Town where he was coached by former Ulster coach Alan Solomons and player Robbie Kempson.

A loosehead prop with a good work ethic and strong build, Wilkinson stands at 6ft and weighs over 18 stone. He has featured in 15 of Connacht’s 16 games so far this season.

Commenting on the news, Connacht Rugby CEO Gerry Kelly said: “We have been very pleased with Brett’s performances and are delighted to have reach agreement on a contract extension.”

Wilkinson, who hails from Grahamstown, admitted: “I’ve really enjoyed my rugby since coming to Ireland and am delighted to extend my stay. It was a big step but, thankfully, so far it has worked out.

“Last summer I was offered the chance to join the Western Province Currie Cup team but I chose to come to Connacht instead.

“It’ been a very good move for me and I am delighted to have settled in.”

Meanwhile, tickets for Connacht’s European Challenge Cup pool clash with Bath on Friday (kick-off 7pm) are currently on sale. After a record Sportsground crowd of 4,560 attended the New Year’s Eve derby between Connacht and Munster, the westerners are hoping for another bumper crowd – with over 400 Bath supporters already booked to travel across the Irish sea.

Tickets for the game can be purchased online at www.connachtrugby.ie from the Connacht Rugby headquarters at the Sportsground (Tel: 091-561568).
