The Energia Men's Junior Cup returns this weekend for the opening round of the 2026/27 campaign, with eight intriguing fixtures promising another exciting chapter in one of Irish club rugby's most competitive knockout competitions.

From last season's beaten finalists seeking redemption to newcomers preparing for their first taste of national cup rugby, the opening weekend brings together familiar rivals, former All-Ireland League clubs and ambitious junior sides looking to make their mark.

With defending champions Seapoint absent from this season's competition, the opportunity is there for a new name to emerge, while several returning clubs will be hoping their previous experience can help them embark on a memorable cup run.

One of the standout encounters sees Dromore welcome Creggs in a repeat of last season's thrilling semi-final, with both clubs hoping to take another significant step towards silverware.

Dromore enjoyed an impressive campaign last term, overcoming Creggs 32-21 to secure their place in the final before suffering defeat to Seapoint in the decider. That disappointment will provide plenty of motivation as they begin another campaign, particularly with home advantage for their opening assignment.

Creggs, meanwhile, will be determined to turn the tables on their Ulster opponents after falling just short of reaching last season's final. As the only two returning semi-finalists from the previous campaign, both sides know what it takes to progress deep into the competition, making this an early test of their ambitions.

Wicklow begin their campaign with a trip to Cork to face Mallow, with the Leinster side hoping to build on their quarter-final appearance last season.

Mallow return to Junior Cup action for the first time in almost two years, having previously exited the competition against Bective Rangers at this same stage. The Cork outfit will be eager to make their return a memorable one, particularly once again in front of their home supporters.

Wicklow however, arrive with recent knockout experience and will be determined to go further than last season, setting up an intriguing encounter between two clubs looking to establish themselves among the competition's leading contenders.

Another of last season's beaten quarter-finalists, Suttonians, travel to Tipperary to face Kilfeacle & District in a contest featuring one of the competition's former champions.

Kilfeacle lifted the Energia Men's Junior Cup in the 2019/20 season but have endured frustrating opening-round exits in their last two appearances. The Tipperary side will be determined to rediscover the form that previously brought them national silverware and avoid a third consecutive early departure.

Suttonians will have ambitions of their own after reaching the last eight during the previous campaign, with the Dublin club hoping to use that experience to launch another strong cup run.

Bandon face an away assignment against Portadown, with both clubs looking to make a positive impression after disappointing or lengthy absences from the competition.

The Cork side suffered a first-round defeat to eventual finalists Dromore last season and will be determined to avoid another early exit.

Portadown meanwhile, return to the Energia Men's Junior Cup for the first time since 2017. After almost a decade away from the national competition, the Ulster outfit will relish the opportunity to test themselves against opposition from outside their province and make home advantage count.

There is also plenty of anticipation surrounding the meeting between Ballina and Clonakilty at Heffernan Park, where the hosts return to Junior Cup action against one of this season's debutants.

Ballina previously reached the semi-finals in 2017 and bring valuable experience from their time competing in the Energia All-Ireland League. The Mayo side will be hoping that pedigree proves important as they look to embark on another memorable national cup campaign.

Clonakilty meanwhile, prepare for their first appearance in the competition, with the Cork club eager to make an immediate impact. Facing experienced opposition away from home presents a demanding opening challenge, but it also offers an opportunity to announce themselves on the national stage.

Another newcomer Lurgan, make their Junior Cup debut with a trip to face Tullamore, setting up an intriguing encounter between an ambitious Ulster side and a club with previous All-Ireland League experience.

For Lurgan, the occasion represents an important milestone and a chance to test their progress against opposition from another province. Tullamore, meanwhile, will be looking to draw on their experience at national level as they aim to make a strong start to their campaign.

Omagh Academicals also make their first appearance in the competition this weekend, travelling west to Galway to face Dunmore.

The former AIL side enter unfamiliar Junior Cup territory but will be hoping their experience of competing on the national stage can help them negotiate a difficult opening assignment.

Dunmore return to the competition after last featuring during the 2024/25 campaign and will be determined to make the most of home advantage. With one side making its debut and the other returning after a season away, both clubs have plenty of incentive to secure a place in the next round.

Completing the opening-round programme, Boyne welcome Ballinasloe in a fixture that sees two clubs make long-awaited returns to the Energia Men's Junior Cup.

Boyne were among the clubs challenging for promotion to the Energia All-Ireland League last season and will be hoping to carry that momentum into knockout competition. The Leinster side make their first Junior Cup appearance since 2010, bringing an end to a sixteen-year absence.

Ballinasloe also return after a lengthy spell away, having last featured in the competition in 2015. The Galway club will be eager to make up for lost time and begin their comeback with a positive result.

With both sides returning to the national cup stage after more than a decade, their meeting promises to be another fascinating contest in an opening round full of compelling storylines.

From Dromore and Creggs renewing their rivalry to the historic debuts of Clonakilty, Lurgan and Omagh Academicals, the Energia Men's Junior Cup promises plenty of excitement this weekend.
