In Division 1B, newcomers MU Barnhall and Enniskillen enjoyed dream debuts, overcoming Ballincollig and Tullow respectively, while Ennis came through a testing encounter with Cooke at Shaw’s Bridge to begin their season on a winning note.
Railway Union produced one of the standout results of the opening round, coming from behind to defeat reigning champions UL Bohemian 19-15 at Park Avenue.
The visitors made the brighter start, with Chisom Ugwueru crossing after just five minutes to give UL Bohs an early advantage. Railway responded through Sydney Davis midway through the opening half, with Heidi Lyons adding the conversion, but Teni Onigbode’s 33rd minute try restored the champions lead.
Trailing 10-7 at the interval, Railway turned the contest around shortly after the restart when Ailsa Hughes crossed in the 48th minute. Lyons converted to edge the hosts ahead before Rebecca Cahill added a third try with six minutes remaining.
UL Bohemian ensured a tense finish when Ugwueru completed her double in the 79th minute, but Railway held firm to secure an impressive opening-round victory and hand the defending champions an early setback.
Blackrock College laid down an early marker with an emphatic 50-5 victory over Wicklow at Stradbrook, running in eight tries to secure the bonus point.
Andrea Murphy was the standout performer, completing a first-half hat-trick as Blackrock raced into a commanding 40-0 interval advantage. Murphy opened the scoring after just four minutes before Ava Fannin crossed twice, with Cara Martin also getting on the scoresheet.
Murphy added her second and third tries before the break, with Abby Moyles converting five of Blackrock’s first half scores.
The hosts continued to dominate after the restart, with Maggie Boylan adding a seventh try before replacement Emily Whittle crossed late on. Wicklow’s response came through Roisin Stone in the 76th minute, but Blackrock had already done enough to make a convincing start to the new campaign.
Old Belvedere also collected maximum points on the opening weekend, defeating Galwegians 31-15 at Ollie Campbell Park.
The hosts made a flying start, with Elisa McGabhann crossing after just three minutes before Clare Gorman doubled their advantage nine minutes later. Alisha Flynn added a third try midway through the opening half as Belvedere established a 19-0 lead.
Galwegians responded through Emily Foley in the 33rd minute to reduce the deficit to 19-5 at the break, but Katie Whelan restored Belvedere’s control with a try shortly after the restart.
Foley kept the visitors in contention with two further tries to complete her hat-trick, crossing in the 57th and 65th minutes to bring Galwegians back into the contest. However, Whelan had the final say, crossing three minutes into stoppage time to complete her double and secure the bonus-point victory for Belvedere.
In Division 1B, Enniskillen marked their first appearance in the competition with an impressive 32-12 victory over Tullow on home soil.
Stacey Sloan opened the scoring after seven minutes to give the newcomers an ideal start, but Tullow responded through Grace Kelly midway through the opening half to reduce the deficit.
However, Enniskillen took control with a devastating spell before the interval. Zara Flack crossed twice in the space of four minutes, scoring in the 30th and 34th minutes, before captain Moya Hill added another try on the stroke of half-time to establish a commanding 22-5 advantage.
The hosts continued to press after the restart, with Amelia McFarland adding a fifth try in the 70th minute to extend their lead.
Kelly crossed for her second try four minutes later, with Hilary Fitzgerald converting, but Flack completed her hat-trick in the 76th minute to round off a memorable debut victory for Enniskillen.
MU Barnhall also enjoyed a winning introduction to Division 1B, defeating Ballincollig 17-5 at Parsonstown.
The newcomers made an excellent start, with Emer Sweetnam crossing after eight minutes before Aoibhín Smith added a second try six minutes later to establish a 10-0 advantage.
Ballincollig gradually worked their way into the contest and were rewarded when Niamh O’Mahony crossed in the 37th minute to reduce the deficit to five points at half-time.
The visitors remained within striking distance throughout much of the second period, with Barnhall unable to add to their early tally as the contest remained finely balanced.
However, replacement Ciara Faulkner provided the decisive moment in the 75th minute, crossing for Barnhall’s third try to put the result beyond doubt.
Abby Healy added the conversion to complete a 17-5 victory and ensure Barnhall joined Enniskillen in celebrating a successful opening appearance in the division.
Ennis completed the opening weekend’s Division 1B action with a hard-fought 14-10 victory over Cooke at Shaw’s Bridge.
The hosts made the brighter start, with Molly Boyd crossing after ten minutes to give Cooke an early 5-0 advantage.
Ennis responded on the stroke of half-time when Takiah Buchanan touched down, with Fia Whelan adding the conversion to send the visitors into the interval leading 7-5.
Cooke regained the advantage shortly after the restart when Freya Boyce crossed in the 45th minute, restoring the hosts’ three-point lead and setting up a tense final half-hour.
With the contest still finely balanced entering the closing stages, Ennis found the decisive breakthrough through Rhona O’Dea in the 67th minute.
O’Dea’s try edged the visitors back in front before Whelan added her second conversion to extend the advantage to four points.
Cooke pushed for a late response, but Ennis held firm to secure a 14-10 victory, with their two converted tries proving the difference in a closely contested encounter at Shaw’s Bridge.
