Burke To Lead New-Look UCC Coaching Team

The new UCC Men's senior coaching group
Ger Burke has been appointed as head coach of the UCC senior Men's team for 2026/27, having helped the club to retain their Division 1B status in April.

Ger Burke, the former Young Munster front rower, has masterminded PBC's recent dominance of the Munster Schools Senior Cup, with the Cork city school winning three of the last four finals.

He oversaw a unique double for Pres this past season, as they also achieved a superb title win in the NextGen Global Schools Challenge Premier Rugby Series.

UCC finished second from bottom in the second tier of the Energia All-Ireland League under Tomás O'Leary, before Burke took charge for April's promotion/relegation play-offs, guiding the Cork students to safety.

The Limerick man will now hope to get UCC back on a firmer footing in Division 1B, as he heads up a new coaching group at the Mardyke made up of former UCC captains, ex-All-Ireland League and representative players, and highly-decorated Munster schools coaches.

Burke's coaching CV also includes experience as part of the Young Munster and Cork Con set-ups in Division 1A, and intriguingly, his UCC side will travel to Constitution in the opening round of the Munster Senior Challenge Cup at the end of August.

His assistant coaches will be two All-Ireland League winners with Con, Luke Cahill and Niall Kenneally. Former back rower Cahill continues on as UCC's forwards coach.

Sligo native Kenneally enjoyed AIL success alongside Cahill, most memorably captaining Cork Con to Division 1A glory in 2017 and 2019, and also skippering the Ireland Club international team.

A strong-carrying centre during his playing days, he is transitioning into coaching and will look to get the best out of the UCC backs, who were most recently coached by Scott Deasy, who has since returned to Temple Hill as Con's Under-21 head coach.

Meanwhile, Ciarán O'Regan will look after UCC's strength & conditioning requirements. He brings extensive S&C experience from working with Pres Rugby and a number of Cork GAA clubs.

UCC, who have backs Christopher Barrett, Charlie O'Shea, and James O'Leary currently away with the Ireland Under-20s, will open the new AIL campaign with a trip to Naas on Saturday, September 26.
