Balbriggan RFC’s Primary School Initiative

balbriggan school programme
Balbriggan RFC is proud to reflect on the success of its Primary School Initiative, a community-focused programme designed to introduce rugby to young children across the Balbriggan area.

Launched with the goal of making rugby accessible to as many children as possible, the club brought the sport directly into local primary schools completely free of charge. Qualified, Garda Vetted and IRFU Safeguarded coaches delivered fun, engaging weekly sessions to junior classes, while the club provided all necessary equipment, including rugby balls, cones and tags.

Community has always been at the heart of Balbriggan RFC, and the initiative was created not only to introduce children to rugby but also to provide schools with a valuable sporting opportunity. By investing time, resources and volunteers into the programme, the club strengthened connections with local families, schools and communities while encouraging active lifestyles and positive participation in sport.

The programme aimed to:

  • Introduce rugby to as many children as possible.
  • Increase awareness of Balbriggan RFC within the community.
  • Create positive, enjoyable sporting experiences for young people.
  • Promote the physical, social and emotional benefits of sport.

The initiative was delivered across five local schools; Hedgestown National School, Balbriggan ETNS, St Molaga’s National School, SS Peter & Pauls JNS and Bellewstown National School.

The impact exceeded expectations. Since February, more than 400 boys and girls from 1st, 2nd and 3rd classes have taken part in weekly coaching sessions, learning fundamental rugby skills while developing confidence, teamwork and a love of physical activity.

“Big thanks to Ciarán and Alex for their energy and enthusiasm. They were great with the children. Yes, we would be delighted to welcome rugby sessions back in September.”
The response from schools was overwhelmingly positive. One school commented:

“The initiative went very well, and the children really enjoyed taking part. Daragh was excellent with the children, and they genuinely looked forward to the sessions each week.”

What makes the initiative particularly significant is its scale and commitment. While many clubs engage with schools through occasional visits, few provide a structured coaching programme delivered entirely free of charge, complete with qualified coaches and equipment. Balbriggan RFC is proud to be among the very few clubs in Ireland offering an initiative of this kind.

Following the success of the inaugural programme, Balbriggan RFC is delighted to confirm that the Primary School Initiative will return this September. Plans are already in place to expand the programme further, including hosting blitzes between participating schools at the club as part of a reimagined Pat Browne Cup.

The success of the initiative has shown what can be achieved when a community club invests in young people. More than 400 children have been introduced to rugby, local schools have benefited from free coaching and resources, and countless positive memories have been created. As Balbriggan RFC looks to the future, the Primary School Initiative will remain a cornerstone of the club’s commitment to community, participation and opportunity for all.
