Young full-backs Tom Larke and Noah Byrne, who have amassed 99 points and eight tries respectively, are still top of the scoring charts in Energia All-Ireland League Men’s Division 1B, on the cusp of the Christmas break.
Old Wesley’s Larke needs just one more point to reach the century mark in a season that is going brilliantly so far for both him and his club. Wesley are a point clear of Instonians at the top of the table, with third-placed City of Armagh a further six points back.
Ever-present in the number 15 jersey, Larke has scored in every match for Morgan Lennon’s men, including landing all nine conversions against Queen’s University, to add to his key 11-point contribution at Highfield the previous week.
Byrne, meanwhile, returned from playing for the Ireland Under-20s against South Africa to add to his try haul for Dublin University. He crossed against both Garryowen and Highfield in recent weeks, to stay clear of his closest rivals.
James McCormick and Bradley McNamara, who has joined McCormick in the Ulster squad as short-term injury cover, are one try back on seven each. McCormick has touched down five times in his last three outings for Armagh.
Pacy full-back McNamara has also scored in each of his last three games, including a brace in Instonians’ bonus point victory over Blackrock College. Sitting on six tries each, Old Wesley captain Kieran O’Shea and Naas’ Paddy Taylor were both amongst the scorers last weekend.
Garryowen back Alex Wood (pictured below) and Inst hooker Oli Cark have taken their respective try talies to five. This Saturday’s round 9 schedule has a Dublin derby between Blackrock and Wesley, and a Colours clash between Queen’s and Trinity.
Behind Larke in the scoring stakes are the equally impressive Taylor, who has risen up the ranks to reach the 70-point mark, Trinity out-half Matty Lynch (66), and City of Armagh youngster Owen O’Kane on 59 points.
Armagh’s home encounter with Instonians this weekend has been postponed following the sudden passing of Armagh senior player Adam Hegarty. The fixture will be rescheduled in due course.
