El Almirante Guillermo Brown es un héroe nacional en la República Argentina que nació en el año 1777 en Foxford, Condado de Mayo, Irlanda.
Guillermo Brown emigró de Foxford a una temprana edad primero a Filadelfia y luego a Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Inspirado por el espíritu revolucionario en su país adoptivo Argentina, estuvo destinado a fundar y liderar su Marina en las guerras por la Independencia.
Luchó asimismo con un éxito excepcional contra los imperios españoles y brasileños a pesar de que, en muchos de los enfrentamientos, sus ejércitos lo sobrepasaban en gran número.
Su conocimiento de las estrategias, el dominio del famoso Río de la Plata en Argentina y su extrema audacia en la lucha, contribuyeron en gran medida al éxito y a la eventual liberación de Argentina.
Guillermo Brown volvió de visita a su país de origen, incluyendo a su pueblo natal de Foxford, Condado de Mayo, en 1846 y fue testigo de la devastación causada por la hambruna. Antes de partir donó fondos considerables para ayudar a los afectados.

It is a great honour for the Foxford Admiral Brown Society to be associated with the inauguration of the Admiral William Brown Cup, which will be presented to the winners of the Ireland v Argentina match on Saturday.
This is a joint initiative between the Embassy of Argentina in Dublin and Ireland in Buenos Aires, the UAR and the IRFU.
Admiral Guillermo Brown is a national hero in Argentina who was born in 1777 in Foxford, County Mayo, Ireland.
William Brown of Foxford emigrated at an early age, at first to Philadelphia and then to Buenos Aires.
Inspired by the revolutionary spirit in his adopted country he was destined to found and lead the navy in the wars for independence.
He also fought with exceptional success against Spanish and Brazilian empires though, in many of the clashes, he fought against much greater numbers.
His strategic ability, knowledge of the region of the famous River Plate in Argentina and extreme courage in the struggle, contributed greatly to the success and eventual freedom of Argentina.
William Brown returned from a visit to his home country, including his hometown of Foxford, County Mayo, in 1846 and witnessed the devastation caused by famine. Before leaving he donated considerable funds to help those affected.
On March 3, 1857, ‘Old Bruno’ as he was affectionately known, died in Buenos Aires at age 80, in the presence of his lifelong friend, Father Fahy of Galway.
In his funeral oration at the grave of Brown, General Bartolomé Mitre, Minister of War, who later became President of Argentina, said: “Brown, standing on the stern of his ship was as valuable to us as a whole fleet.”
The Republic of Argentina honors this Irishman as a national hero and many streets and parks, including sports stadiums throughout Argentina are named in his honor.
The Irish Navy cooperates with ceremonies commemorating the anniversary of Brown performed in Foxford and Dublin annually.
In his hometown of Foxford, County Mayo, is a museum and a park dedicated to Brown, and in the capital city, Dublin, located on Sir John Rogerson’s Quay is an imposing statue of the naval hero of Argentina.
