AIB Junior Cup: All Ulster Final Set

AIB Junior Cup: All Ulster Final Set

There will be a new name on the AIB Junior Cup come January 30th as Armagh have knocked holders Tullamore out in the semi finals. It will be an all Ulster final with City of Derry beating Monivea in the other semi.

The AIB Junior Cup final will be an all Ulster affair with Armagh and City of Derry booking their places in the decider at the expense of holders Tullamore and Connacht club Monivea.

Tullamore’s dreams of a third final in a row came a cropper in the Palace Grounds on Saturday. The Ulster side proved too strong for ‘Melly’s Men’ and ran out 21 – 8 to winners to book their place in the final.

In the other semi final City of Derry put paid to Monivea’s hopes of becoming the first Connacht club to contest the final with a 26 – 11 win at Judges Road.

Armagh reached the semi finals of the inaugural competition back in 2006 while fellow Ulster side Rainey Old Boys became the first club to capture the AIB Junior Cup title that year.

Coleraine made the final the following season only to lose out to Seapoint. Navan and Tullamore extended the Leinster stranglehold in ’08 and ’09 but the 2010 cup is destined for the trophy cabinet in Armagh or City of Derry.

The Junior Cup final kicks of at 1 p.m.and is a double header with the AIB Cup final – an all Munster affair with Cork Con and Garryowen set to dog it out.
