Former Ireland international Rob Henderson, whose retirement from rugby coincided with Munster’s Heineken Cup win last month, is to take over as director of rugby at Garryowen.
Last season’s coaching duo Paul Cunningham and Philip Danaher are handing over the reins at Dooradoyle to the 33-year-old Henderson, who was capped 29 times for Ireland and three times on the Lions tour of Australia in 2001.
The Limerick club topped the AIB League Division One table, winning 14 out of the 15 games during the 2005/06 season to claim the new Champion club plaque.
Born in London, Henderson joined Munster in 2001 and played 66 times for the province. He also turned out for Young Munster during that time in the All-Ireland League.
For his first venture into coaching, Henderson will be assisted by Ray Egan, a fitness advisor with the IRFU, who has been drafted in as conditioning and skills coach. Darragh O’Sullivan and Paul Hogan – two members of the club’s All-Ireland League winning team of 1993/94 – have also joined the Garryowen coaching ranks as forwards coach and coaching co-ordinator respectively.
