Galwegians “Raring To Go” For Visit Of Greystones

Galwegians enjoyed their first AIL win in almost 10 months at home to Sligo on the opening Saturday of the 2019/20 season. It was a positive start to life in Division 2B of the Energia All-Ireland League. For a proud club, it was also vital they put some distance between themselves and the memory of relegation.

They could have little complaint about what came next – a 30-13 defeat at neighbours Corinthians. New Head Coach Andrew Browne could see the frustration on his players’ faces and knew he had to harness it to get things turned around again.

“I’d say the lads would have loved to play again straight away just to redeem themselves a little bit,” he said. A Round 3 game at home to Greystones will provide that opportunity.

“Being back in Glenina will be good. Tuesdays and Thursdays are big sessions for us and they’ll be rearing to go for Greystones, no doubt about it.”

“Losses like that can have an effect on the atmosphere around the place like it did last year. We have to make sure as a coaching group and as a squad that we stay positive.”

Positivity has been a theme of Browne’s tenure to date. It started with bringing in fresh faces.

“Recruitment was a big thing and trying to get that big squad together that possibly we didn’t have last year.

“That’s one of those things that we’ve tried to build in pre-season is that [cohesive] environment and the boys have bought into it really well. We’ve good numbers training. It’s really competitive and I think that’s what’s driving better standards.”

“The important thing is to try and keep that up. We were pretty disappointed after [losing last week]. We had momentum going into the second half and unfortunately Corinthians outplayed us – especially after such as good result last week against Sligo.”
