Murphy Crowe Picks Up Players’ Player Award

Flying Ireland Women’s Sevens winger Amee-Leigh Murphy Crowe has won the latest Elverys InterSport Player of the Tournament award for her performances at the recent Sydney 7s event in Australia.

Following each round of the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series, the Ireland Women’s Sevens squad nominate one of the players for their contribution both on and off the pitch.

Lucy Mulhall and her team-mates achieved their highest ever finish on the series with fourth place at the Sydney 7s last month, thanks in no small part to Murphy Crowe’s superb haul of nine tries in six games. She is currently joint-second on the World Series try scorers’ list with 18 tries in three tournaments – just two behind the Black Ferns’ Michaela Blyde.

Captain Mulhall won the inaugural award for her performances at the Glendale 7s at the start of the season. Her two tries and 15 conversions inspired the Ireland Women’s team to a sixth place finish at the tournament in Colorado.

Rising star Eve Higgins picked up the award at the World Series’ second leg in Dubai. Still just 19-year-old, the Railway Union starlet was a nominee for the World Series Rookie of the Year award last season.

Her strong defensive performance and three tries in six games led to her nomination by the Ireland squad. She was also listed as World Rugby’s ‘One To Watch’. Currently, Higgins is in fourth place on the DHL Performance Tracker which takes into account tackles, breaks, offloads and carries.

Next up for the Ireland Women’s Sevens side is the Japan leg of the World Series in Kitakyushu, which takes place on April 20 and 21. Anthony Eddy’s charges have been drawn in Pool C for the tournament with the USA, who are currently second in the overall standings, and regular rivals Fiji and England.
