“I’ve always enjoyed watching rugby and the Seven’s Programme gave me a chance to be the best athlete that I can be.” Lucy Mulhall, Ireland Women’s Sevens Captain

Who can play for Ireland?
Any player who is Ireland qualified (grandparents included) are eligible to play for the Ireland Women’s XV’s and/or Seven’s team.
The Women’s Seven’s squad were unlucky to not to qualify for the Olympics in Rio, however they did secure their place amongst the elite with qualification to the Women’s Seven’s World Series.
The Women’s XVs have had great successes in recent years. They won the Grand Slam in the Women’s Six Nations in 2013. They followed this with a fourth place finish in the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2014 and their second Womens’ Six Nations title in 2015.
Routes to the National Squad
Most players will play for a club in Ireland with the aim of being picked to represent their Province. The four Provinces (Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster) compete in a three match series each year. These games act as a selection tool to the National Squad (see player pathway model).
However, there are other routes. Players can be spotted in club games during the season and may be invited in to Ireland training sessions.
The Irish Exiles Branch identifies and develops potential Irish players in England, Scotland and Wales. Keep an eye out for upcoming screening sessions here
Numerous athletes have transferred from other sports into the Ireland Women’s Seven’s Programme. If you think you have what it takes and you’d like to try out for the Seven’s programme please email email@example.com for more information.
