Irish Rugby Generated Bumper TV Audiences In 2018

The Ireland Men’s team was the most watched sports team of 2018 on Irish television with over 5.5 million viewers across the 2018 Six Nations and GUINNESS Series.

Ireland’s thrilling win over England on St. Patrick’s Day, to secure the Grand Slam, was the most watched sporting event of the year, and the second most watched TV programme of 2018 – after the Late Late Toy Show.

Official figures, released today by TAM, also show that Ireland’s first ever victory over New Zealand on home soil (pictured below) was the second most watched sports event of 2018 with over 926,000 TV viewers.

Joe Schmidt’s men helped Irish Rugby dominate the sports category, with the team appearing eight times in the top 50 most watched TV programmes of 2018.

Commenting on the figures, IRFU Communications Director Stephen McNamara said: “We are delighted to see so many people tuning in to support Ireland on these great sporting occasions. Live sport is now almost unique in that it continues to deliver events that can still bring family and friends together to watch live.

“Our teams are always grateful for the support from those who attend games and take the time to watch these games on TV and listen to them on radio.

“With 2019 offering another packed schedule of international rugby, we hope that viewers continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with the team.”
