The ‘Spirit of Rugby’ is in safe hands at the Women’s Rugby World Cup as players from all the competing teams took part in community engagements yesterday.
It may be a familiar image but the visit of international athletes to Our Lady’s Childrens Hospital in Crumlin is far more than just a photo opportunity.
Not alone is it welcomed by the hospital, the families and the children, it serves as a powerful reminder of the privilege and responsibility that comes with pulling on your national jersey. It was a humbling experience for all those who visited yesterday and a reminder of the fragility and resilience that children combine.

Meanwhile, in UCD, there was plenty of activity on the warm-up pitch adjacent to Billings Park as players from all twelve countries enjoyed a coaching/training session and Tag rugby games with members of some local disability rugby teams, including De La Salle Palmerston Eagles, Seapoint Dragons and Westmanstown Wasps.
Speaking about the day, IRFU Education & Training Manager Colin Moran said: “‘Spirit of Rugby’ is about having an inclusive view of rugby. Disability rugby is a growing area in Ireland and this was an opportunity for the players to give back to the community.”
The whole day was a testament to the spirit of rugby and it left a legacy of smiles and uplifted hearts that even a torrential downpour could not dampen.
Australia’s Emily Robinson, who is a Development Officer with the NSW Waratahs, commented: “We all start rugby for different reasons and when you get to do something like that and have a great experience, you remember why you play rugby.
“You remember the joy and happiness that it brings to you. Everyone is here for different reasons but for me, enjoyment of rugby is a major reason as to why I play.”
