Ireland Women’s Sevens Squad Named For Sydney Camp

IRFU Director of Rugby Sevens Anthony Eddy will take an Ireland Women’s Sevens squad of 14 players to Australia on Monday for a training camp as part of the preparations for the Sydney leg of the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series.

The squad will stay at the Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation in Narrabeen, New South Wales and will train alongside the Australian Women’s Sevens team during the camp.

It will be the second successive year that the Ireland squad have travelled to Narrabeen, which is the training base of the Australian Women’s Sevens side, who won gold at the 2016 Olympics in Rio and are the current holders of the World Sevens Series title.

Speaking ahead of the squad’s departure for Sydney, Anthony Eddy said: “This camp in Narrabeen will be important for our build-up to the Sydney Sevens tournament. The preparation time in Australia will allow us to adapt to the summer weather, which has been very hot in recent weeks and will also allow the squad to recover fully from the long trip.

“Having the opportunity to train with the Australian Women’s Sevens team, who are Olympic gold medallists and won the World Sevens Series last season, should prove highly beneficial for the players as we head into round two of the series in Sydney.”

The Sydney Sevens will take place at the Allianz Stadium on Friday, February 3 and Saturday, February 4. Similar to last month’s Dubai Sevens, and next March’s Las Vegas Sevens, the Women’s Sevens Series will be paired with the Men’s Sevens Series in Sydney, with the tournaments overlapping on the Saturday.
