There is an exciting finish as we head towards the end of the GUINNESS PRO12 regular season with something riding on the result of every game; whether it is a place in the play-offs or Champions Cup qualification for next season. As in previous seasons, all games will kick off at 3pm to avoid any team having an advantage.
Only the top five teams can now make the GUINNESS PRO12 Play-Offs, and ultimately the final at BT Murrayfield on May 28, namely Glasgow Warriors, Leinster, Connacht, Ulster and Scarlets. Of those only the Scarlets cannot claim a home tie. It will take other results going their way for Ulster to be playing in Belfast should they retain their place in the top four.
Defending champions Glasgow Warriors and Connacht face each other, the winners of that tussle is sure to claim one of the two home play-off places.
The losers will be looking over their shoulders to see how Leinster are faring against Benetton Treviso, who upset Connacht in round 21. A Leinster bonus point win in that game should be enough to see them book a home semi-final berth for the third year in-a-row.
Glasgow Warriors and the Scarlets are already assured to be the highest Scottish and Welsh finishers in the PRO12 and claimed automatic spots in next season’s Champions Cup. Connacht and Treviso presently hold the Irish and Italian spots, although only one league point separates Treviso and Zebre.
The three other places up for grabs in Europe’s top tier would at present go to Leinster, Ulster and Munster, however the Ospreys and Edinburgh can mathematically still overtake Munster should Anthony Foley’s side not pick up a point in round 22.
The broadcasters for round 22 have been confirmed as:
Connacht v Glasgow Warriors – TG4/BBC Scotland
Ospreys v Ulster – Sky Sports/BBC Northern Ireland
Munster v Scarlets – S4C
Edinburgh v Cardiff Blues – BBC Wales
Zebre v Newport Gwent Dragons – RAI Sport
Leinster v Benetton Treviso – Not live
While Leinster v Treviso will not be shown live, cameras will be at the RDS to relay any scores and highlights to other broadcasters as this game will have a bearing on the play-offs.
The GUINNESS PRO12 final will take place at BT Murrayfield, Edinburgh on Saturday, May 28. See www.pro12rugby.com for ticket details.
