Safeguarding – Our Number One Priority

With the season now underway, it is a good time for clubs to review their policies to ensure they have safely recruited their staff and volunteers.

It is essential that all those working with age-grade players on a regular basis are aware of the IRFU Safeguarding Policy and sign the Declaration of Intent.

Vetting checks should also be completed and this can be done through the IRFU. All age-grade volunteers that assist on an occasional basis should read and agree to abide by the Code of Conduct within the IRFU Safeguarding Policy.

Reminding clubs of the importance of safeguarding, the IRFU’s National Safeguarding Officer Anne Marie Hughes said: “The way we work with age-grade players, how we behave around them and our attitudes towards them will contribute to the way young people feel about themselves.

“It is important that their rugby experience is a fun and safe one. An important step in ensuring this player-centred environment is the selection of appropriate sports leaders such as coaches, staff and volunteers to work with young people.

“Best practice information is contained within the ‘safeguarding’ section of the IRFU website. Completing these checks is an essential piece in ensuring that your club operates to the highest standard and allows age-grade players to enjoy their rugby in a safe and fun environment.”
