Daly Delighted With Ireland’s Sevens Progress

The Ireland Men’s Sevens squad are looking forward to next month’s European Olympic Repechage tournament after winning the European Division C and B titles in the space of a fortnight.

Tom Daly and his team-mates were in dominant form at the Division B tournament in Zagreb over the weekend, stringing together six big wins and scoring 384 points and 60 tries without reply.

Next up for the young Irish squad, who are coached by Anthony Eddy and Stan McDowell, is the European Olympic Repechage in Lisbon on July 18-19, and captain Daly believes his side can continue on an upward curve.

“We were delighted to make the final and win the competition in Zagreb,” he said afterwards. “We’re continually improving. There was a marked difference from the Division C competition in Bosnia, which was evident in our performances over the weekend and by the winning margins.

“It gives us confidence going to Lisbon to compete with the teams who have also made the cut to play at that level.”
