Coghlan And Doyle Win Monthly Awards

Retiring Ireland Women’s captain Fiona Coghlan and head coach Philip Doyle have both won sports awards for the month of August thanks to their historic Women’s Rugby World Cup performances.

Fiona Coghlan has been named the Irish Times/Irish Sports Council Sportswoman of the Month for August.

She was selected ‘not just for her own performances and leadership, but as a representative of a team that rose to the occasion this summer and truly captured the imagination, raising the profile of Women’s rugby to levels these pioneers could only have dreamt of’.

Coghlan is one of two rugby players nominated this year, alongside her former Ireland team-mate Niamh Briggs, and won the overall award in 2013 following Ireland’s Grand Slam win.

Meanwhile, Philip Doyle was named Philips Sports Manager of the Month for his work in guiding the team to an historic win over New Zealand and their highest ever finish in the Women’s Rugby World Cup – fourth place.

Like Coghlan, he also won a monthly award in 2013 for coaching the girls in green to Grand Slam success.
