Jimmy Nelson RIP

The IRFU was saddened today to learn of the death of 1948 Grand Slam hero Jimmy Nelson.

Jimmy Nelson passed away at the age of 92 – he will be much mourned by his family, friends and the rugby community in Ireland.

First capped against Australia in 1947 he went on to win 16 caps for Ireland and was a vital member of the famous 1948 Grand Slam team.

He toured with the British & Irish Lions to New Zealand and Australia in 1950, scoring two tries in a Test match against the Wallabies.

Following his retirement from playing. Jimmy had a distinguished career off the pitch for his club Malone, the Ulster Branch and the IRFU where he served as Honorary Treasurer and was elected President of the Union in the 1982/83 season.

The committee and staff of the IRFU offer their sincere condolences to his family at this sad time.

Jimmy Nelson OBE, 1921-2014. May he rest in peace.
