Cavan Rugby Choir Sing Ireland To Victory

A great start to the RBS 6 Nations Championship began with a great atmosphere at the Aviva Stadium, created in no small part by a stirring rendition of the national anthem followed up with a rendition of ‘Ireland’s Call’, which almost ripped the roof off the ground, by a rugby club choir which is building quite a reputation.

Located at Cavan Rugby Club, the choir was formed in 2009, largely as a result of the drive and enthusiasm of Choir President, Tom Farrell.

“We have a signed up membership of 50 souls, from many different backgrounds with a love for all sports.
Through our passion for singing we have assisted schools, community centres, sports clubs and charities with their fundraising,” he said.

“We have performed on local and national stages. Among our highlights we include Heineken Cup matches in the Aviva Stadium and RDS in Dublin, Ravenhill in Belfast and the Sportsground in Galway.

“Singing the national anthem ahead of the eagerly awaited Ireland-Scotland RBS 6 Nations clash was a great honour for the choir and it has been a goal since the choir was founded.”

IRFU President Pat Fitzgerald said: “In big games and on big days such as the first day of a new RBS 6 Nations Championship the atmosphere in the stadium can provide that extra little something that can literally sing a team to victory.

“I was filled with pride for our rugby family as I stood with the President Michael D Higgins on the touchline during this emotional and inspiring performance and I wish to thank and congratulate Cavan Rugby Club Choir for their rousing rendition of the national anthem and ‘Ireland’s Call’.”
