Naoupu Named As New Galwegians Women’s Coach

Connacht forward George Naoupu has been announced as the new head coach of the Galwegians Women’s squad. Aside from his RaboDirect PRO12 and Heineken Cup duties, Naoupu will assume the coaching role this winter alongside fellow Kiwi Beth Mallard – a Black Fern international and Connacht representative.

The legacy of Irish Women’s rugby, following the exploits of Ireland’s Grand Slam winners and Sevens squad this year, appears to be secured in Galway at least following the appointment of Connacht stalwart George Naoupu as head coach of last season’s national cup winners, the Galwegians Women’s squad.

The appointment of a professional player to the helm of a women’s team has been warmly welcomed nationally, and should continue to raise the profile and standard of the women’s game.

After the announcement of his appointment, Naoupu said: “I’m thrilled to be involved with the Galwegians Rugby Club and grateful for the opportunity to coach the Women’s team.

“The development and promotion of female rugby players is important for the game to grow here in Ireland aside from the men’s competitions, so I’m pleased to be part of that resurgence. It’s an exciting time for women’s rugby.”

Naoupu will make his first appearance as coach next Thursday (August 15) when Galwegians host a Women’s Rugby Open Night – an event open to all levels, including beginners.

And not content with expanding its senior player base, Galwegians RFC will also begin underage training sessions from September.
