McGrath Is Boyne’s New President

The election of former Ireland scrum half Robbie McGrath as President of Boyne Rugby Football Club was greeted with loud and sustained applause at the club’s AGM last Thursday night.

Robbie McGrath was an extremely popular choice of the club’s membership and his standing in rugby terms is still seriously well respected among his peers.

Upon taking up the role at Boyne RFC, the genial and modest optician’s opening remarks were: “I’m not one for making long speeches, but whenever I’m presented with a challenge, I apply nothing less than 200% to whatever it is I take on.”

McGrath went on to tell the meeting he was extremely honoured to be asked to take the club Presidency. He also thanked his predecessor, Reggie McHugh, whom he said is a tough act to follow.

McGrath’s first duty was to present McHugh with an appreciation award for his excellent service as Boyne’s Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President and President between 2008 and 2013.

Boyne finished fifth in Ulster Bank League Division 2B last season and recently appointed Michael Walls as their new head coach. He begins a two-year term this month.

Wallace had a distinguished playing career, representing Leinster and Ireland at Under-17, Under-18 and Under-19 level, as well as Clontarf, Connacht and Coventry.

The Galway-born player, now 33, made a number of appearances for Connacht in the Celtic League and also played 11 times for the province in the European Challenge Cup.

In more recent years he has held various coaching roles at Schools, Youths and senior level including Coventry, King Edward School and South Warwickshire. He was player/head coach with Berkswell & Balsall RFC before linking up with Boyne.
