Afoa Undergoes Surgery In New Zealand

Ulster’s All Black prop John Afoa has undergone surgery today in Auckland to repair a torn tricep tendon in his left arm.

The injury was sustained in the RaboDirect PRO12 final against Leinster and will require a recovery period of 10-12 weeks.

John Afoa, who made 26 appearances for the province this past season, is therefore expected to be available for the start of the province’s 2013/14 campaign.

Meanwhile, it was a busy day on the pitch for two of Afoa’s Ulster team-mates with Rory Best making his Lions debut and Tommy Bowe scoring a second half try in the tourists’ 69-17 win over Western Force in Perth.

A number of the province’s youngsters are also due to play for the Ireland Under-20s later today in their IRB Junior World Championship opener against Australia – Hughes Insurance Ulster Academy players Rory Scholes, John Donnan and Conor Joyce will all start in Vannes.
