Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport, Leo Varadkar TD, hosted the reception to celebrate Ireland’s success in this year’s Women’s Six Nations Championship.

Addressing members of the squad, coaching staff, the IRFU, Ashbourne Rugby Club and other dignitaries at the reception, Minister Varadkar said: “Today we honour a phenomenal sporting achievement: the winners of Ireland’s first ever Women’s RBS 6 Nations Championship and Grand Slam title. You are most welcome to this reception, and congratulations to you all.

“Ireland is experiencing tough times economically and sporting performances such as yours have lifted the spirit of the nation.

“I had the pleasure of watching you defeat the French in Ashbourne during the Six Nations. It was really great to see so many people watching Women’s rugby, at the game and on TV.

“All of us here know that it takes personal sacrifice and demanding training to perform at this level. You have to balance this with work and study. That makes your achievement all the more remarkable.”
