Coghlan Honoured At Sportswoman Awards

Fiona Coghlan, the captain of the Ireland Women’s team, received her monthly award at the Irish Times/Irish Sports Council Sportswoman of the Year Awards ceremony in Dublin on Thursday.

Fiona Coghlan, the Leinster and Ireland prop, was acknowledged as the winner of the February 2012 award for her performances in the Women’s Six Nations Championship.

Coghlan, also a monthly winner in 2011, captained Ireland to their most successful Six Nations campaign yet last spring.

The girls in green comfortably beat Wales, Italy and Scotland, and only lost by a point away to France before going down to reigning champions England in their Triple Crown match.

The Ireland rugby captain was among 12 sports stars nominated for the 2012 Sportswoman of the Year title, which was won by Olympic gold medal boxer Katie Taylor.

One of Ireland’s most renowned and respected Irish Olympic athletes, Maeve Kyle, was also awarded with a lifetime achievement award for her valued contribution to the world of athletics.
