Under-19 Girls Interpro Blitz A Big Success

Last Saturday, Limerick Institute of Technology played host to the first Under-19 Girls Interprovincial Blitz between Connacht, Leinster and Munster. Over 60 players in total represented their provinces throughout the day.

Each province played each other once with Munster coming out victorious at the end of the day.

The first match of the day between Connacht and Leinster looked like it was going to remain scoreless, but for a try in the closing seconds from Leinster.

Connacht dusted themselves down and came out all guns blazing for their second match of the day. However, after a tough battle Munster proved too strong for them and having played some lovely offloading rugby finished the game as 28-0 winners.

The final game of the day saw Munster continue to dominate, and after a hard-fought encounter they were victorious over Leinster by 22-0.

Greg McWilliams, the Ireland Women’s backs coach, was in attendance  and was very pleased with the skill levels he saw.

McWilliams, who addressed the players after the Blitz, said: “I am very pleased to see such a great display of rugby here today. It is very important that you keep working hard in your clubs.

“I have no doubt that there will be many of you pushing through to represent your provinces and even Ireland at senior level in the future.”

IRFU Women’s Sub Committee Chairperson, Mary Quinn, thanked all of the players, coaches and WRDOs for their hard work and commitment in their preparations for the day.

“It was a sheer delight to see such wonderful performances of rugby on show today and you are a credit to your clubs and coaches,” she said.

“It is safe to say that the future of Irish Women’s rugby is bright and we will continue to work hard to ensure that the Women’s game continues to grow from strength to strength.”

The Munster Under-19s will take on Connacht  U-19s this Saturday (December 8) at Musgrave Park at 1pm. This match will precede the Women’s senior match between Munster and Connacht  which will kick off at 2.30pm.
