Sunday mornings at Greystones Rugby Club are already buzzing with activity from the huge numbers playing or being coached in youth and mini rugby.
Now a new dimension has been added by this progressive County Wicklow club with the launch of Greystones’ Seagulls special needs Tag rugby.
Fun and making friends are the main objectives for the team but these enthusiastic players have been honing their skills over the last number of weeks and are now looking forward to playing matches against other clubs.
Greystones RFC President Paddy Elliott has great praise for the dedicated group of volunteers led by Keith O’Brien, who organise the team.
Explaining how this initiative helps further the bond between the club and the local community, Elliott said: “We are working very closely with Bray Lakers who already do a smashing job involving people with special needs in sport and we are extremely grateful for their support in helping launch this initiative.”
Tag rugby is a non-contact form of rugby suitable for all ages, male and female. With Sevens admitted as an Olympic sport from 2016 the players in Greystones Seagulls are hoping Tag rugby will be included in the Special Olympics so they can emulate Reggie Corrigan and other players from Greystones who have represented Ireland.
