Brian’s Blog: Watching And Training

Injured Ireland captain Brian O’Driscoll may have spen the weekend watching rugby but he was back in training with Leinster on Monday morning.

Saturday was something of a rugby marathon for me, starting off at home on my couch, watching Ireland’s game against Italy and then going to a friend’s pub to take in Wales’ win against England and a gritty, hard-fought draw for Leinster in tough conditions in Glasgow.

Watching a match at home is a more comfortable experience, as I can shout and roar at the television with impunity and I don’t have to mind my Ps and Qs.

I also took in over the weekend the second half of Rory McIlroy’s victory over Lee Westwood in the World Matchplay semi-final and then the final, when he lost to Hunter Mahan.

His victory over Westwood, coming from three down, would have been mentally draining. You can probably tell that I didn’t have to battle for the remote control.

On Monday I went into training and the lads were in good spirits. Leinster have managed two wins and a draw during the Six Nations so far.

The international contingent also came in and they were very upbeat after the victory against Italy. It’s great to get some pitch-time and train with other players rather than the coaches.

It did remind me though how far I have to go, even down to skills and relearning defensive systems and calls. And no, I am not getting any special treatment in terms of the physical aspect of things, although there was no contact work during this session.
