Brian’s Blog: IFTAs, Training and Thinking Big

Brian O’Driscoll was hoping for the France v Ireland match to be postponed until September – but, as he says himself, for his own selfish reasons! In his latest blog, he brings us up to date with his injury recovery and what life is like outside the Irish camp.

As events transpired at the Stade de France I was very fortunate to be at the Irish Film & Television Awards in Dublin rather than freezing my toes off in Paris.

I have to admit that I was one of those hoping that the game would be refixed for summer or even next September, obviously for selfish reasons!

I am plodding along with my rehabilitation and am due to see the specialist in the next week or so to ascertain whether I can take my training to the next level.

I am enjoying some pitch time but need to remind myself occasionally that patience is not so much a virtue as a fundamental requirement when you’re working your way back from injury.

I thoroughly enjoyed my night at the IFTAs and it is brilliant the way that the stars of Irish television and film support the awards. My personal highlights was meeting Peter McDonald whose short film Pentecost has been nominated for an Oscar.

Outside of rehab I have been getting on with domestic DIY chores and was delighted to chat with some very impressive young people who are part of Headstrong’s Think Big campaign which promotes a positive mental attitude. The presentations and dissertations were incredibly accomplished.

It’s striking to highlight the contrast between that and some of the poor behaviour and attitude of several professional sportsmen, across a number of sports in recent weeks. Some of the antics just beggared belief.
