Galwegians Launch Advanced Development Squad

Over the summer a quiet revolution took place at Galwegians RFC. Under the leadership of youth fitness specialist Greg Payne, a programme was put in place to select and develop underage rugby players, so they can be fast tracked to compete at Ulster Bank League level and beyond.

The process started in Glenina last June, where 20 players were selected by their coaches to participate in the programme which concentrated initially on fitness and conditioning, and was then extended to include skills and mental fitness.

From the start of the season the original 20 has been whittled down to four players – Danny Deegan, James Mitchell, Cathal Reidy and Rory Millar – as the emphasis was to select based on quality and commitment, rather than having a pre-ordained quota.

Galwegians are very grateful to Connacht stalwart Gavin Duffy (director ADS), Gerry Conway (manager ADS) and Rory Cunningham (assistant coach ADS), whose participation was essential in getting the programme up and running.
