McCarthy Holds Scrum Clinic At Shannon

Munster scrum coach Paul McCarthy presented a ‘Building a Quality Scrum’ coaching workshop at Shannon RFC’s Coonagh ground on Monday night.

The session was coordinated by Munster Rugby’s coaching staff with 42 coaches from clubs and schools across the North Munster region in attendance.

Similar numbers are expected to attend the South Munster clinic which will take place at Cork Constitution FC next Monday (November 28) at 7.30pm.

Scrum technique modules included individual body positions along with binding and the front, second and back row combinations building into the full scrum.

Each of these primary units was deconstructed by Paul McCarthy to give the coaches the insight and knowledge of the finer points of the scrum. And when these points were made, the scrum was then reconstructed to give further insights into the art of scrummaging.

Munster Rugby would like to thank the Shannon Under-21 players who were on hand to take part in the practical element of the workshop.

This is the second ‘Professional Coaches Workshop’ initiative for domestic rugby coaches in the province, following a ‘Skills Workshop’ presented recently in Cork and Limerick by Munster skills coach Ian Costello.

A specialised ‘Forwards’ coaching session will be presented by Munster forwards coach Anthony Foley in early 2012.
