Ulster And Connacht Register Additional Cup Players

Prop John Afoa, a Rugby World Cup winner with New Zealand last month, has been nominated by Ulster as an additional player for their 2011/12 Heineken Cup campaign.

Each team is allowed to put forward two additional players during the pool stages, one of them must be a front row forward, and Ulster have also nominated South African utility back Stefan Terblanche in their 38-man squad.

2007 World Cup winning captain and Springbok hooker John Smit has been nominated by English champions Saracens as one of their two permitted additional players ahead of the ound 1 matches being played this weekend.

Others nominated as additional players by the Heineken Cup sides are new Connacht centre Kyle Tonetti, whose move to the province was announced yesterday, and utility back Gaetan Germain (Racing Metro 92).

In the Amlin Challenge Cup, scrum half Cillian Willis, whose short-team deal with Leinster ended recently, has been nominated to play in the tournament by Tonetti’s former club Sale Sharks.

All the nominated additional players must replace a deregistered player in the team’s squad and no squad can exceed 38 players.
