IRFU National Referees Conference

The IRFU Referee panels, including international referees Alain Rolland, George Clancy and Peter Fitzgibbon, gathered for a weekend in Limerick recently for their annual conference.

The main thrust of the conference was to ensure all major issues of Law Application were agreed, with the key objective of ‘consistency’ across all domestic rugby, including all divisions of the Ulster Bank League.

The outcomes of the conference have subsequently been fed through the provincial referees structures.

“Coaches and teams rightly want to see the laws applied as they observe them in RaboDirect PRO12 and ERC,” said Owen Doyle, the IRFU’s Director of Referee Development.

“Consistency is key and all referees will work hard to deliver. Level 4 workshops throughout the season will maintain this theme.”

It was also a chance to wish Ireland’s contingent of Rugby World Cup match officials all the best for the tournament.

George Clancy from Limerick will take charge of the opening game of the Rugby World Cup between New Zealand and Tonga in Auckland on Friday.
