Ferris Progresses With Running Programme

Ulster and Ireland back rower Stephen Ferris has returned to pitch-based running this week as he targets a return to match action.

Stephen Ferris has not played since injurying his left knee in Ulster’s final Heineken Cup pool game against Aironi back in January.

He has since undergone surgery and his rehabilitation has included a progressive running programme that was conducted by Ulster physiotherapist Alan McCaldin on an AlterG treadmill.

The anti-gravity running machine controls the pressure exerted on the body, allowing Ferris to load his knee with up to 100% of his bodyweight.

National and provisional physio and strength & conditioning units have agreed on a planned programme for him which was devised by Ulster strength & conditioning coach Jonny Davis.

The programme is based on a comprehensive analysis of GPS data to determine appropriate volume and intensity of sessions – global positioning systems track player movements on the pitch.

The 25-year-old back rower is hoping to prove his fitness ahead of Ireland’s GUINNESS Summer Series matches next month.
