O’Connell Hearing Set For Thursday

Munster’s Paul O’Connell, who was sent off during the closing stages of their Heineken Cup Pool 3 win over the Ospreys, is due to appear before an independent disciplinary hearing at ERC Offices in Dublin this Thursday.

Paul O’Connell is facing further disciplinary action as a result of the red card he received during last Sunday’s Munster v Ospreys encounter at Thomond Park.

The red card was issued to second half replacement O’Connell in the 70th minute by referee Christophe Berdos for striking the Ospreys’ Jonathan Thomas in contravention of law 10.4 (a).

The independent judicial officer appointed for the hearing, which will commence at 9.30 pm, is HHJ Jeff Blackett (England).

Under the IRB recommended sanctions for offences committed within the playing enclosure, law 10.4 (a) – striking an opponent with a hand, arm or fist carries the following penalties:

Lower end: 2 weeks
Middle range: 5 weeks
Top end: 8+ weeks
Maximum sanction: 52 weeks

Law 10.4 (a) – striking an opponent with the elbow carries the following penalties:

Lower end: 2 weeks
Middle range: 5 weeks
