Leprechaun Rugby is a fast and exciting soft-contact game of ‘touch’ rugby designed to assist general physical development, to play an important role in ‘games concepts’ programmes and to introduce the game of rugby union to primary school children in a very simplified form.
Leprechaun Rugby was originally adapted from ‘New Image Rugby’, which originated in Argentina and was formalised in New Zealand as New Image Rugby and in Australia as Walla Rugby.
In Ireland, Leprechaun Rugby was pioneered by former Ireland captain Willie Anderson when he was Rugby Development Manager for the IRFU from 1988 to 1994 and by the late Jimmy Davidson, who coached Ireland from 1987 to 1990.
The non-tackling, soft-contact nature of Leprechaun Rugby allows it to be played by males and females as a mixed activity, irrespective of size, age or ability.
Leprechaun Rugby aims to encourage the positive development of running, balancing and handling skills.
