Munster Delay Squad Announcement

Munster were expected to name their squad for their Magners League derby clash with Ulster today, but have delayed the announcement until tomorrow (Thursday).

There was a threadbare look to the Munster squad that assembled at a wet UL on Wednesday afternoon, with a total of 21 players unavailable for this week’s league encounter with Ulster.

Ten Munster squad members are on the injury list, two are suspended and nine are at a training camp with Ireland in Limerick.

Three locks, Donncha O’Callaghan, Mick O’Driscoll and Donnacha Ryan, are included in that nine, along with back rower David Wallace and versatile back Keith Earls who have just three starts for Munster under their belts going into the November internationals.

However, Munster team manager Shaun Payne believes that despite the absentees, the province will still put out a strong side for Friday’s match at Ravenhill.

“I’ve said all along that this season we’ve perhaps our strongest squad, and I certainly think that the side that we select for Friday will reflect that,” he said.

The trio released back to Munster from the Irish camp – John Hayes, Peter Stringer and Johne Murphy – all trained today.

Scrum half Stringer, who is almost certain to start in Belfast, will become just the third Munster player to win 200 competitive caps for the province, following in the footsteps of Anthony Foley and Alan Quinlan.
